Contemporary 24K gold and glass Cigar Ashtray by Laura Sattin

About the Item

24K is a sophisticated whiskey set handcrafted from clear mouth-blown glass and adorned with pure 24 K gold leaves, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship. In addition to the unique tumblers, this set also includes a matching whiskey bottle and cigar ashtray. Crafted through a traditional mouth-blowing technique, yet utilizing contemporary recycled glass from car headlights known for its durability and quality, skilled artisans carefully shape the glass entirely freehand. The gold leaf is applied to the molten glass during the hot-working process, and its placement cannot be fully controlled by the glassblower, resulting in a truly distinctive, one-of-a-kind design for each piece. The transparent body of the glass allows for admiration of the natural color of the whiskey, while the addition of gold leaf creates a subtle yet captivating accent, enhancing the overall allure of the collection. The distinctive feature of the solid and heavy rounded bottom allows the tumblers to fit comfortably in the hand and ensures a secure grip, even after indulging in a few sips! Please note: This piece has been designed by Laura Sattin and made in collaboration with skilled glassblowers at a furnace located at the foot of the Bernese Alps in Switzerland. The slight variations in shape, alterations in color, subtle tool marks, or small air bubbles that can be seen in the glass all testify to the authenticity of the craftsmanship. Due to the handcrafted process each piece is unique. The technique of applying gold leaf to blown glass involves several precise steps. Firstly, the glass is heated to a high temperature, making it malleable for shaping. Once the desired shape is achieved through blowing, the glass is then cooled slightly to ensure it retains its form. Next, the gold leaf is prepared by artisans. Gold leaf is extremely thin sheets of gold and it's delicate to handle. While the glass is still hot and pliable, the artisans delicately apply the gold leaf to the surface. This is often done by gently pressing the gold leaf onto the glass using specialized tools, brushes, or even their fingers. The heat of the glass helps the gold leaf adhere to the surface. Once the gold leaf is applied, the glass is carefully cooled and annealed to strengthen it and ensure the gold leaf remains securely attached. This process requires skill and precision to achieve the desired result without damaging the delicate gold leaf or the glass itself. The end result is a stunning piece of glassware adorned with elegant gold accents, adding a touch of sophistication to the finished product.

  • Contemporary Murano Glass Doppio Filo Vase, Acid Aquamarine by Laura Sattin
    Located in 1204, CH
Doppio filo is a collection of vases made by combining two different colours of filigree rods. The linear, oblique pattern is obtained thanks to a refined glass making technique called “mezza filigrana” invented in Murano in the first half of the 16th century and still used by only a few glass masters in Murano. The complex realisation of these pieces requires the use of long glass rods previously prepared and containing individual coloured glass “threads” in the centre. After being superimposed, intertwined and melted, the rods are wrapped around the molten glass and blown to obtain the desired shape. Mouth-blown Murano glass vase, handmade combining orange and ruby pink filigree rods. This piece has been designed by Laura Sattin...

  • Contemporary Gradienti Vase Small, Fuchsia-Aurora by Laura Sattin
    Located in 1204, CH
The collection called ‘Gradienti’ is inspired by the infinite colour nuances of the sky. The technique used to make these vases is called ‘sfumato’, where the goal is to achieve imperceptible transitions between hues of soft colours. Because of the unpredictable behaviour of the colours during melting and during the hot working pro- cess, every vase is different: sometimes the transition from one colour to another is perfectly smooth, other times you can read a clear transition, a kind of horizon. This unpredictable component is what makes each vase unique. To make a piece, two colours of molten glass are combined at the beginning of the glass-making process. They are then dipped in an extra thin layer of transparent glass and mouth-blown into a wooden mould. Finally, the opening of the vase is shaped freehand. After cooling overnight in the kiln, the vases are sandblasted and waxed giving the pieces a satin, smooth and soft surface. Gradient mouth-blown glass, fading from steel blue to warm grey, sandblasted and waxed. This piece has been designed by Laura Sattin...
