Rare Covered Art Deco Jar with Rabbit Finial by Gensoli for Sevres, Blue & Gray
About the Item
Both whimsical and high-style, this remarkable Art Deco covered jar is decorated on its sides with a sophisticated pattern of chevron, zigzag and wave motifs executed in deep, rich slate, gray and ruddy brown glazes. The lid features a rabbit finial sitting in a pool of radiating, rich glazes. The artist was Maurice Gensoli, who had worked at the famed Sevres porcelain manufactory since the early 1920s, and became the head decorative painter there in 1927, the year this piece was made. Gensoli had a deep knowledge of chemistry, enabling him to perfect various firing and resistant enameling techniques and develop rich, deep glazes such as those evident here.
