Tzom - Carved Cantera Stone Skull Planter from Jalisco, Mexico
About the Item
Tzom planters are inspired by the tzompantli, a type of wall built across different cultures during the Pre-Columbian period. These walls would be covered in carved (or often real) skulls and provide protection to sacred sites.
Cantera is a type of tuff rock -classified as both igneous and sedimentary- that has been widely used across Mexico, especially for construction during the colonial period. Since cantera can be found in a variety of colors, many colonial cities are associated with the particular hue that was used for its architecture.
The vases are carved with both manual and electrical tools by the Íñiguez family in Yahualica de González Gallo, Jalisco. Small imperfections can be found in the vases, due to the nature of the material and the artisanal process. Lighter hues (white and pink) can develop patina. These factors may contribute to a long-term ruin-like look, which is part of the design concept. Dark grey cantera may present some small, shiny, crystal-like grains.
All planters come with a drainage hole. Weight varies from 10-12kg in white cantera to around 17kg in dark grey cantera.
