18th Century Italian Wooden Carved Sarcophagus-Shaped Chest with Reliquary

About the Item

An Italian Rococo sarcophagus-shaped wooden chest of bombé rectangular form with richly carved gilt decoration on a distressed ebonized ground. The hinged pagoda top lid is skillfully carved with a frieze of urns in arches above a convex gadrooned molding and palmettes. The bombé body is adorned with carved foliate scrolls surrounding a discreet keyhole above the red glass paned oculus of a reliquary, while corner acanthus leaves flank two interlaced C-shaped scrolls on the sides. The exuberant use of curves and counter curves along with the gilt and natural forms in the carved ornamentation of this rare Italian sarcophagus-shaped chest are typical of the Rococo style that originated in France and spread throughout Europe during the 18th century. The opulent style and mystic charm of this extraordinary and rare piece could bring a striking accent to any home.
