Mughal Meena Silver Ceremonial Cup, 18th Century

About the Item

This Mughal Meena Silver Ceremonial Goblet from the 18th century is a masterpiece that reflects the opulence and artistic sophistication of the Mughal Empire. This goblet is adorned with exquisite meenakari or enamel work, a traditional technique where vibrant colors are fused onto the silver surface. The goblet features symmetrical vertical floral motifs that are meticulously crafted to create a sense of balance and harmony. The floral patterns are intricately detailed, with delicate petals, leaves, and tendrils forming a symphony of colors against the silver backdrop. The use of meenakari not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also adds a layer of symbolic significance, as various colors often carry specific meanings in Mughal art. The silver goblet itself is a testament to the fine craftsmanship of Mughal artisans. The metal would have been carefully shaped and adorned with raised floral patterns, demonstrating a high level of skill in repoussé work. The symmetry in the design suggests a meticulous attention to detail, reflecting the Mughal emphasis on precision and balance in their art. The cup likely held cultural or religious significance, possibly used in important rituals, celebrations, or as a symbol of status and prestige. The use of silver, in combination with meenakari, adds a touch of luxury and grandeur to the goblet, underscoring its ceremonial nature. Overall, this Mughal Meena Silver Ceremonial Goblet from the 18th century stands as a testament to the confluence of artistry, cultural richness, and ceremonial practices in Mughal India. Its intricate floral motifs, symmetrical design, and the use of meenakari make it a remarkable artifact that not only serves a functional purpose but also encapsulates the aesthetic and cultural values of its time.

Bibliography: Fernández, Alejandro; Munoa, Raphael; Rabasco, Jorge. "Encyclopedia of Spanish and Viceregal American Silver". Second edition, corrected and enlarged. Torreangulo Graphic Art, Madrid, 1985. Page 240; page 430, image 1472. Jug or pitcher of silver in its color, with a circular foot decorated with moldings and a string of pearls, semi-ovate belly on which, by means of a band of classicist architectural motifs, a curve, a step and a high neck with a concave profile rise. The mouth, with a sinuous outline and enhanced with another band of plant elements, presents an elevation towards the spout, and covers with a cap or lid topped with a swan-shaped knob. The handle is a feline with a round shape, in an attitude of stalking towards the bird. Typologically, the piece follows neoclassical models, brought from Europe to Madrid and spread from this place. Likewise, it should be noted that the handle with a figurative element of a round shape is not entirely common, although there are known examples in private collections of jars...
