Pair of 19th Century Japanese Meiji Period Patinated Bronze Urns
About the Item
A very handsome and large scale 19th century Japanese Meiji Period patinated bronze urns. Each urn is raised on a circular mottled base. The urns are decorated throughout with scenes of birds and foliate. At each side is a foo dog mask with scrolled handle. Large birds are displayed at the neck and a Greek key like design accents the rim. All original patina throughout. The Meiji period, also known as the Meiji era, is a Japanese era which extended from October 23, 1868 through July 30, 1912. This period represents the first half of the Empire of Japan during which Japanese society moved from being an isolated feudal society to its modern form. The period corresponded with the reign of Emperor Meiji after 1868, and lasted until his death in 1912.
