Antique Victorian Sterling Silver and Turquoise Posy Holder

About the Item

An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Victorian English sterling silver posy holder; an addition to our ornamental silverware collection. This exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver posy holder has a conical shaped form onto three legs. The surface of the holder has a frosted finish and is embellished with bright cut engraved Greek Key fret band ornamentation in addition to stylized leaf motifs. The body is further ornamented with an applied knop encircled with bead ornamentation flanked with a scalloped border and collet set cabouchon turquoises. The upper portion of this impressive example of Victorian silverware is encompassed with a protruding undulating band accented with further collet set turquoise alternating with a swagged chain articulating from ring loops. The upper rim is embellished with a large applied bead decorated border. The vessel terminates with a bright cut engraved layered leaf texture to an applied ball motif. This impressive holder is supported by three hinged legs, conjoined with a silver chain. This antique posey holder retains the original pins; the featured pins penetrate the holder allowing a posy/nosegay/tussie-mussie to be held securely. The surface of this impressive example of antique silverware retains the original gilding; this has worn with age in a sympathetic fashion to an aesthetically pleasing mellow color. Condition This antique silver posy holder is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. Once all three legs are extended the holder does not stand straight from all angles, this does not affect the integrity of the piece and it remains functional. Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the holder are all very clear. Dimensions Height 13.4cm/5.3". Diameter of rim 4.4cm/1.7". Width across feet 7cm/2.8". Weight 2.6 troy ounces/82g. Maker: Alexander Macrae. Date: 1874. Origin: London, England. Video: A video of this fine piece is available upon request. Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this piece of antique Victorian silverware.
