Brass Vase by Pierre Forssell, Skultuna, Sweden, 1970s
About the Item
Rare vase designed by Pierre Forssell. Produced in Sweden by Skultuna ca 1970s (this piece engraved and dated 1994, given as a gift). Made from solid brass. Good vintage condition without damages. patina from use and wear.
Pierre Forssell's artistic career began early, and he began studying decorative painting at Konstfack together with Bengt Lindström as early as 18 years old. After two semesters, he transferred to the silversmithing line, and was employed after training as a designer at Atelier Borgila in Stockholm.
Just a few years later, 27-year-old Pierre Forssell got a freelance job at Gense. There he mainly designed household items in stainless steel, including the Spectra and Piruett cutlery series. But it was with the salt, pepper and sugar shakers Shakers that he got his big break. The cone-shaped litters were exhibited at the Hälsingborg exhibition, the H55 fair, in 1955, and Pierre Forssell received attention for his functional and original design.
Pierre Forssell came to Skultuna Messingsbruk in 1955. There he created several of his today's iconic objects, such as the Tulpan and Aniara candlesticks and the Pendel and Reflex wall sconces. With its modern design, Forssell contributed to making brass a popular material, especially during the 1960s and 70s, and raised the mill's status.
The austere but elegant design that characterizes Pierre Forssell's objects still stands today, and can be found in many Swedish homes.
