Decorative Pillar Design Green and Black Pitcher by Primavera, circa 1930s

About the Item

Decorative pillar design black-enamel and green crackle-glazed Primavera pitcher/vase by C.A.B. (Céramique d’art de Bordeaux) for Printemps (circa 1930s). The baluster, or column design, follows the form of an exquisite flower. The handle suggests a utilitarian usage - the aesthetic allure validates it as a work of art. The green colored base is covered by a spotted metallic black enamel. The overall effect is sublime. This is an extremely desirable piece for collectors of beautiful objects or anything made by Primavera. In excellent vintage condition commensurate with its age and usage. Marked on the base: 'Primavera 19472 Made in France'. About Primavera: Primavera was the design studio of the iconic Parisian department store, Printemps. A collaboration between Printemps and René Guilleré, founder of the Société des Artistes Décorateurs, came into being in 1912 when Guilleré convinced store executives that the buying public was yearning for modern furniture and art objects produced by artisan workshops. His goal: to make beautifully designed utilitarian objects accessible to the public and to renovate the domestic household landscape. Primavera itself later formed a collaboration with C.A.B., (1919-1947), a start-up innovative ceramic atelier that only counted 20 workers and six ovens to create their wonderful ceramic objects. This collaboration gained both Primavera and C.A.B. a desirable notoriety for being on the cutting edge of design at that time. Dimensions: H 34 cm (13.39") W 18 cm (7.09") D 16 cm (6.3")

Our carafe colection is a tribute to the traditional pitchers of the regions of Tonala´ and Tlaquepaque in Jalisco, these two regions developed during the period of the conquest as pottery centers. Originally these bottles were used to store water in addition to keeping it a few degrees below room temperature, their low temperature cooking allows the jug to breathe water and this in contact with the outside air cools the jug and therefore the liquid inside. To avoid moisture stains on the surfaces where the jug is placed, a plate is placed. The jugs were usually decorated with paintings...

  • Black Glazed Ceramic Pitcher with Green Glints by Jean Girel, French Ceramist
    By Jean Girel
Located in Camblanes et Meynac, FR
Black glazed ceramic pitcher with green glints by Jean Girel, French ceramist This is a very beautiful ceramic pitcher. The shape of the jug and the handle remind us of the shapes of popular pottery works, while the very refined work of the enamel shows the great mastery of the ceramist Jean Girel. The glaze is a deep black illuminated by green glints. It is an object which is at the same time rough and elegant, it emanates strength and softness. Very sober, it can be integrated in any type of interior, particularly of wabi-sabi inspiration. The signature "Jean Girel" is below the base. Jean Girel is one of the most famous french ceramist art masters of the 21st Century. Inspired by the chinese Song ceramics...
