Durant Kilns Leon Volkmar Tall Vase Egyptian Faience Glaze, Arts and Crafts

About the Item

Leon Volkmar established Durant Kilns in Bedford Village Westchester County New York in 1910. His experiments led to his version of an Egyptian Faience glaze and was celebrated nationally. Dated 1916, this is a relatively early and large successful vase form. Such elegant examples of Volkmars work can be quite difficult to find. Volkmar's ceramics rest at the intersection of the American Arts and Crafts and emerging studio pottery movements. He continued working with his carefully developed glazes into the Art Deco period winning awards and maintaining stature for two decades.
