Early 1940s Abstract White Matte Pottery Vase with Figure

About the Item

One-of-a-kind hand thrown figural abstract mid-century modern vase by California artist Hamilton Achille Wolf (American, 1883 - 1967). This vase exemplifies an organic modern aesthetic with a white matte finish, natural texture, and minimalist figural design. The vase is incised with two dynamic stick figures with expressive faces. This unique piece is shaped with natural irregularities and is not perfectly symmetrical, showing the hand of the artist. Incised on base with the artist's signature "Wolf". Measures 5.5"H x 4.25"D. A Post war California artist, Hamilton Achille Wolf studied at Columbia University, New York, National Academy Design, Art Students' League, and the Academie Colarossi in Paris. Wolf taught at the Los Angeles School of Art & Design and was the head of the Art Department of the University of Washington, Seattle. In 1928 he joined the faculty of the California College of Arts & Crafts.
