Fine Art Nouveau Amphora Rstk Fairy Tale Princess Portrait Vase, circa 1904-1905

About the Item

Art Nouveau amphora fairy tale princess portrait vase. Manufactured by Riessner, Stellmacher & Kessel of Turn-Tepliz, Bohemia, circa 1904-1905. A stunning portrait vase done at the turn of the century on a base of ivory porcelain and decorated with a woman illuminated by an iconic sunburst aureole over her regal coronet, which houses two delicate inset gres-bijou. The vase was completed with an outstanding diversity of finishes: exquisite hand painting, low relief, gilt and intricate frit dust palettes. The back of the vase is decorated at the top with a naturalistic forest scene of trees, leaves and undergrowth in an evocative palette of violet and gilt. The middle section is complexly finished in matte frit dust in gold, green, and rust brown. Around the entire base of the vase runs a lush bed of verdant green frit, gilt vines, and a string of roses that each have an inset cabochon of gres-bijou, Amphora's trademark simulated jewels. On the underside is impressed with the "Amphora” insignia used by Riessner, Stellmacher & Kessel and the numbers 2089. This vase is believed to have been designed by Nikolaus Kannhauser with artwork inspired by Klimt and Mucha. Scott, Ohio, 2004, p. 93 (similar designs illustrated). Measurements: 9 1/8” H x 4 1/8” diameter. Condition report: No chips, cracks, or flea bites. Age appropriate handling wear.
