Huge Japanese Ikebana Slab Vase 1980s

About the Item

If you're looking for Ikebana pottery on a grand scale, this is your vase. A traditional slab construction but with a 1980s twist, this magnificent terracotta earthenware vessel is made for large-scale arrangements. The form and weight of this vase are designed to balance the height of larger flowers, grasses or branches used in an arrangement. The mouth of the vase is relatively small, to help keep heavy arrangements upright. We love how this vase stands like an animal and how the surface texture gives a hide-like feeling, almost as if it's alive. In spite of its size and weight it feels animated. The vase was actively used for many years for ikebana displays and has a few marks to show for it. We find these warming and humanising. The vase has no makers mark but is part of a single owner collection - the Roseby collection - which contains many high quality ceramics. Unsure of its origins but assume it was produced in Japan. The matriarch of the Roseby family visited Japan to study Ikebana and made several important vase purchases there in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.
