Japanese Antique Ceramics with Vertical Stripes / 1800s / Edo Period

About the Item

If you want something special, we recommend purchasing items selected by us. We sell carefully selected old Japanese items. I've seen tens of thousands of items so far. Based on that experience, only selected items are posted here. We are able to do this because of our long experience. There may be items on the 1stdibs site that look and feel the same, but the items selected by Brood are unique. This is a Seto ware pot made in the late Edo period. Seto is a kiln with a long history in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. (Seto kilns are marked with red circles on the map.) It is said to have originated around the 13th century. I think this is influenced by the design of Western pots. The wooden box says "Dutch pot", but I think I misunderstood it as Dutch pottery. Originally, it may have been something to store seeds, or a pot to put used charcoal in. However, it is believed that they began to be used as tea ceremony utensils halfway through, and that they were filled with water to add water to the tea kettle when it was running low, and that they were used as containers for washing tea bowls and other items. It also comes with a lacquer lid for that purpose. (I filled it halfway with water and left it for about 2 hours, but there was no leakage. However, if you leave it in the water for a long time, the water may penetrate and soak from the bottom.) Blue and black colors are an occasional feature of Seto vessels. I like the rustic feel of the handwriting. It's a very cute design. How about decorating your room? Weight: 1.65kg

  • Japanese Antique Pottery Hanging Vase/Edo/1800s/Boat-Shaped Vase
    Located in Sammu-shi, Chiba
This is a black-glazed boat-shaped pottery made in the late Edo period of Japan. This will be a hanging vase. Pour water directly into this and decorate the flowers. Also, perhaps this is a pottery called Seto-yaki. Seto is an ancient kiln located in Aichi Prefecture. Various shapes and colors were produced there, and in the late Edo period, dark glazed pottery was also produced. When a dark brown glaze is applied, the areas with thick glaze look black, and the areas with thin glaze look brown. I put water directly into this and left it for a day, but there was no water leakage. I would say it is in very good condition. Although it is a small item, it has a very strong presence. It has a glossy and elegant appearance. There are many types of Seto pottery...
