Japanese Antique small Pottery Jar 15-16th Century/ Wabi-Sabi Jar/Tokoname

About the Item

This is a small pot made in the late Muromachi period (1400-1500s), which is older than the Edo period in Japan. This is a pottery called Tokoname ware. Tokoname is a kiln located in Aichi prefecture, Japan. It is said to have originated around the 12th century. Also, in Japan, there are 6 kilns with a long history that are still going on. It is one of them. (Tokoname Kiln is marked with a red circle on the map.) It has a slightly distorted shape, but with the addition of small chips on the mouth due to long-term use and natural glaze, you can enjoy the wabi-sabi scenery. The distorted shape is due to the structure of the kilns of this period. During this period, an astonishing number of pottery was laid out in the kiln and fired, so the pots were close to each other. Therefore, it is thought that the vase next to it was pressed and transformed into such a slightly distorted vase. Also, at that time, there are marks on the body that were peeled off when adjacent pots were stuck together. This is a well-baked and firm skin. Also, I filled it with about 1/3 of the water and left it for a day and it didn't leak, but if I leave it for longer than that, it will permeate and the bottom may get a little wet. Please make time to dry when replacing the water. It is very nice to decorate with flowers. It's small size allows you to put it anywhere. How about displaying one of Japan's old charming items?
