Kernos Vessel by Acoocooro

About the Item

Kernos vessel by Acoocooro Dimensions: Ø 13 x H 23 cm. Materials: Stackable set of two "crema maya" marble bowls and cast bronze bowl and lid; vessel, container, or burner. Kernos (plural kernoi), a very peculiar form of compound vessel or, simply put, «a plurality of bowls,» that was utilized for ceremonial purposes from as early as the Neolithic period. It may have been part of the rites and offerings to goddesses like Demeter, Kore, and Attis; but there are those who believe it was nothing more than table dishes. The two crema maya vessels, and the two bronze sculptures that form Kernos para Antonio are no less ambiguous: it may or may not be or have been a censer, a ceremonial cup, a container of domestic use, a vase for a family heirloom, or none of the above. Founded in 2017 by Martín Diego Salido-Orcillo and Antonio Mendoza Bravo, ACOOCOORO is a furniture, lighting and artifacts studio, a lab, focused on aesthetic and historic research, on objects' narrative and emotional relation with individuals and space. Every object, every piece, more than a product in a collection, is the result of exploration and experimentation through materials, processes and artisanal work. These elements fill every one of them with history, stories and memories: those of the individuals that conceive and create them, and those of the people that live their lives through and with them. Silent Design, finally, is a guiding principle in ACOOCOORO's practice, whenever the collaboration with artisan groups is involved, with a complex yet clear goal: the establishment of non-extractive, cooperative, self-sufficient relations, where craftsmanship, economic benefit, authorship, property, and narrative are reclaimed by and rebalanaced in favor of the artisans themselves, and not the designers.
