Antique Green Vase in Pulegoso Glass By Napoleone Martinuzzi for Venini, 1928

About the Item

The large vase in pulegoso glass with ten ribbed gilded handles applied one on top of the other is a masterpiece designed by Napoleone Martinuzzi, who is credited with introducing one of the most revolutionary materials in the history of Novecento glass: pulegoso glass. The invention of “pulegoso glass” dates back to 1928, exploiting and emphasizing a manufacturing defect, namely a dense presence of bubbles produced by chemical agents during fusion, such that it became almost opaque. With this dark green-hued material Martinuzzi made an amphora exhibited at the 1928 Biennale, a large vase and a bowl for the Vittoriale by 1930. This vase not only represents innovation in glass-making techniques but also a turning point in the appreciation of Murano glass art, where imperfection became a new form of beauty. In his role as principal designer and artistic director of Venini from 1925-1932, Napoleone Martinuzzi was responsible for creating some of the most visually striking and technically innovative art glass ever produced by the factory. Central to his mature work was a devotion to the revival and reinterpretation of classical forms, the exploration of color and the development of surface treatment. Chief among his contributions to the field was his experimentation in vetro pulegoso, with its many inclusions of tiny trapped air bubbles and foamy, lightly iridized surface designed to resemble chalcedony. The noble vase on offer fully embodies the complete range of Martinuzzi’s artistic values. Bibliography Franco Deboni, Murano ’900.
