Museum Series - Vase o.2
About the Item
The Museum Series draws inspiration from ancient red earthenware, evoking timeless beauty and simplicity. Each piece embodies the spirit of these historic vessels, capturing their raw charm. Crafted with appreciation for early pottery's primal allure, these ceramics invite you to infuse modern life with the ancient world's untamed beauty, celebrating simple forms and earthy hues.
Ugly Things et al. is a ceramics brand that seamlessly blends the ancient and the contemporary, the elegant and the playful. Founded by artist Zou Chen, the brand was born from a passion for creating artful sculptures that elevate everyday life. Inspired by the ancient vessels that grace the halls of museums, Zou brings a fresh perspective to traditional ceramic techniques.
Since relocating to Los Angeles in 2024, Zou has drawn inspiration from the city's breathtaking landscapes and geological wonders. On her hiking adventures through the wilderness, she forages for wild clay, which is incorporated into her work. Vessels are adorned with clay slip sourced from the iconic Santa Monica and San Gabriel Mountains, infusing the pieces with the essence of the land that has been sculpted by nature over millions of years.
Zou's ceramic journey began in the storied town of Jingdezhen, China, known for its rich history in ceramic arts. She further honed her skills at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, where she graduated from a ceramics program renowned for its innovative approach to merging craft and art. With meticulous attention to detail, Zou hand-builds each ceramic vessel, adorning the surfaces with expressive, calligraphy-like strokes. Her works are a testament to her deep appreciation for the ancient and eternal, while embracing a distinctly modern sensibility.
