Napoleone Martinuzzi 1935 Murano Amphora Vase Venetian Vetro Black & Rosso Glass

About the Item

Venetian art glass vase by Napoleone Martinuzzi. An antique pre WWII unique piece made in Italy at the Murano island in Venice, back in the 1935. It was designed by the artistic director Napoleone Martinuzzi for the Vetri Artistici e Mosaici Zecchin & Martinuzzi, a Venetian glass company founded by Vittorio zecchin and Napoleone Martinuzzi in the 1932. This rare bulbous amphora vase was blow (Soffiato) and treated with applied red glass-paste at the fluted neck and the two handles. The main body is made of black pasta vitrea "patte de verre" with flakes of silver foil inclusions and the handles and the trims in vivid red glass. Measurements: The height is 12.25 inches (31.12 cm) and the base diameter is 7.5 inches (19.05 Cm). Literature: Barovier Marina 2001 Pp-105, Illustrated. Napoleone Martinuzzi He was born in Murano in 1892 and died in Venice in 1977. In 1910 he studied sculpture subject in Rome together with Angelo Zanelli. He got back to Murano, and in 1925 he joined the Venini & C. as partner and art director. His creativity gave him a position in the front line of rebirth of the art of glassmaking. In 1928 he made experiments with the pulegoso glass. In 1932 together with Francesco Zecchin he established the Zecchin-Martinuzzi firm, participating in the 1933 Triennale, where he exhibited a series of zoomorphoses sculptures. After a long break, in 1947 he worked as art director at Seguso Arte Vetro. From 1953 to 1958 he designed chandeliers and vitreous tiles for Cenedese. During the 60's some of his works have been executed by Antonio Barbini. Condition: The overall condition of this piece is excellent. Beside the little normal wear, there is no damage to the glass.     Soffiato glass charger plate designed by Salviati & Co. Great decorative piece, created at the Murano island in Venice Italy by the Salviati & Co. This flat charger was crafted during the art deco period back in the early 1920 by the blown glass process. Made up in transparent amber glass with the upper rim accented by a stripe made up from blue pate d verre. Soffiato Glassblowing or Soffiato in Italian, is a glass forming technique that involves inflating molten glass into a bubble with the aid of a blowpipe. A person who blows glass is called a glassblower, glassmith, or gaffer. The word come from soffietta, a tool used as a puffer to further inflate a vessel after it has been removed from the blowpipe and is attached to the pontil. It consists of a curved metal tube attached to a conical nozzle. The glassblower reheats the vessel, inserts the nozzle into its mouth so that the aperture is blocked, and then inflates the vessel by blowing through the tube. Salviati & Co.     Vetro calcedonio vase by Napoleone Martinuzzi for Venini Murano ca. 1930s. A very rare Murano art glass vase attributed to Napoleone Martinuzzi around 1930. Manufactured by Cappelin in the 1920s or Venini in the 1930s. Thin hand blown malachid (calcedonio) glass with curved handles on each side. Similar to Venini model number 3255. Measures: Height: 9.06" (23 cm) Diameter: 6.3" (16 cm) Napoleone Martinuzzi (1892 -1977) was an Italian sculptor and designer who left his mark on Italian glass art in particular. As graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice, he worked with Ca' Pesaro artists and exhibited at Ca' Pesaro in 1908. In the 1920s he was appointed as Director of the Murano glass Museum. In 1925 he founded Venini & Co. with Paolo Venini and others, of which he took over the artistic direction. For Venini he created stunning creations in soffiato, opaque and pulegoso glass that received international recognition with many awards. His creations of animals, fruits and succulent plants gained international success too. The Cenedese Glassworks , Seguso Vetro d'Arte and Pauly & Co were his last creative stations.
