Pair of Covered Vases in Polychrome Porcelain in the Taste of Sèvres

About the Item

Pair of covered polychrome porcelain vases in the style of Sèvres with gilt bronze mounts. The base stands on four claw feet and cartouches in the form of cut leather decorated with shells. The gilt bronze handles are decorated with lion's head surmounted by a shell and finished with a foliage motif. The lid is topped with a rococo foliage and a pine cone. Mark HN n°2.22 under the foot. Each vase is decorated with a turquoise background with gilt decoration and two scenes in cartouches: a landscape scene and a "gallant scene". The landscapes present a swamp with an autumnal atmosphere or the shores of a quiet lake. In one scene, a young woman, wearing a dress with a rolled-up apron and a straw hat, is blindfolded while a young man in a pink jacket tickles her neck with a feather. On the other, a shepherdess in a pink apron holds a bale of hay under her arm and a shepherd's crook in the other. She turns to a gentleman in a rust-colored jacket and pink breeches who shows her the way. This is a French work from the 19th century. Want to know more about gallant scenes?
