Stig Lindberg Two Mid-Century Gustavsberg Reptil Vases
About the Item
Stig Lindberg (Swedish, 1916-82) was one of the greatest Scandinavian designers of the Twentieth Century. He was prolific in ceramics designing everything from tableware ranges to unique stoneware pieces. He also designed in other mediums like glass and textiles. His whimsical, playful, freeform style is the epitome of the mid-century look and was a huge influence on others in the post-war years. He began his work at Gustavsberg in 1937 and stayed there until 1980 taking over as artistic director in 1949. He was the winner of a long list of prestigious prizes throughout his career and his work can be found in museums across the world including the National Museum, Stockholm and the New York Museums of Modern and Metropolitan Art.
Two wonderful and stylish Swedish Gustavsberg mid-century ceramic Reptil vases decorated in contrasting blue glazes by Stig Lindberg (Swedish, 1916-82) and dating from the 1950’s. The vases stand on a wide oval shaped unglazed foot rim the body of tall graduating shape and narrowing towards the top which is also slightly angled. The vases appear like tree stems with relief patterning to the body which form like scales and hence the title ‘Reptil’. One vase is decorated in rich dark blue glazes while the other in light blue glazes and they certainly compliment each other and display beautifully as a pair. Both vases have impressed factory marks to the bases.
Provenance: from a choice collection of Scandinavian pottery amassed by a private gentleman who sadly now has insufficient space to display these fine pieces.
Excellent condition with light wear associated with age and use.
