Smålandshyttan
Smålandshyttan was a small but very important glass work between 1947 – 1976. The main designer and artist at the mill was Josef Schott, born in 1915 in Marienbad (now the Czech Republic). Schott was educated at art schools in Salzburg and Berlin and after World War II he moved to Sweden where he first worked as a jewelry manufacturer. He later moved to Norway but returned to Sweden in 1955 and became a designer at Smålandshyttan.
He designed many models for the mill, including several vases with colored underlays and relief patterns in typical "Schott style" that can not be missed. But he also produced some such vases in clear glass. They were blow molded and reworked with blasting and edge grinding. These innovative methods and designs used by Josef Schott has resulted in that glass from Smålandshyttan still is very sought after. He also worked with painting and sculpture and was an art teacher in Nybro. Schott died in 2009 at the age of 94.
