Silver Plated Combination Cigar Cutter/Bud Vase by Derby, Connecticut circa 1885

About the Item

This is a most unusual piece appealing to both those who collect cigar cutters, and collectors who seek out silver plated novel items. It consists of a bottom scalloped edged bowl which serves as an ash tray and a receptacle for cigar tips; a cigar cutter is mounted in the middle of the centre stem which is decorated with a floral geometric design to the semicircle below the scalloped edged bud vase above. A nice quality floral relief pattern decorates the bottom of the ash tray. Attached to the side of the bottom bowl is a highly detailed small bird. All in all, this is a fine, well designed and nicely balanced one-of-a-kind item with broad based appeal. The marking is clearly stated and highlighted beneath the small bird (Derby Silver, Birmingham, Conn. with it's anchor like logo off to the side), attesting to it's Derby manufacture and Connecticut origin, circa 1885. The Derby Silver Company was established in 1873. The number 1505 is etched on the underneath of the bowl indicating the stock number. The piece is all original and the silver plate is in excellent all original condition and complete with a beautiful patina. Dimensions: 4 5/8" wide x 4 5/8" high. Note: Cup at the top might have been used for small cigars; view image to see what that would look like. Provenance: From my own personal collection and acquired from the discerning George Cross collection of 19th century Western and saloon items.

  • Victorian Porcelain Spittoon, circa 1880 by Imari, Japan
    Located in Incline Village, NV
The mark on the underneath (see image) indicates that this spittoon is of Japanese Imari porcelain, manufactured circa 1880, and made specifically for the American market for the preponderance of bars and saloons at that time. These were popular from 1865 to the turn of the century; this is a particularly fancy and elaborate example. Note the copious and highly detailed and beautiful floral decoration to the inside of the upper portion of the spittoon; pretty fancy for something meant for spit and saliva! Fantastic and all original condition with no cracks, no chips and very bright paint in sharp colors of blue rust and pink, and meticulously painted in a floral pattern. Several of these would have been “stationed” in strategic places within a saloon. This is a wonderful piece of porcelain, and quality item of saloon and Western United States history...
