Wild Boar Game Hunting Themed Silver Plate Decanter Drinks Set on Tray, c. 1960
About the Item
A superb mid century wild boar-themed drinks set, comprising a boar’s head decanter with six boar’s head stirrup cups and matching tray, made in Spain in c. 1960. The boar’s head decanter and stirrup cups on their own are very hard to find; it is a real treat to have them together with the matching tray.
The decanter is voluptuous and has a satisfyingly weight in the hand. It is mounted with a silver plated boar’s head in excellent original condition. The head opens for refilling the jug, and the hinge is firm and solid. The handle of the jug terminates as a boar’s tail. The body is heavy blown glass with a ribbed swirling pattern. This is the original that inspired the Hog’s Head pitcher at Hogwarts in the Harry Potter film.
The silver plated stirrup cups all have boar’s head terminals and can be stood either way up. They gather round the central boar like a sounder of boarlets. The extremely rare silver plated tray completes the wild boar theme, with finely modelled boars as handles and textured tree bark detailing around the rim.
The silver plating on the jug and stirrup cups is in excellent condition. The tray has some light scratches commensurate with use, but in general the condition is excellent. All together the set has a wonderful theatrical presence.

Hukin & Heath (active 1855 – 1953)
Hukin & Heath was an important British manufacturer, active between 1855 and 1953, specializing in silver and electroplate. The company is best known for its skillfully manufactured reproductions of Persian and Japanese pieces, mainly silver and electroplated wares, that were produced under the guidance of Dr. Christopher Dresser. The production of the Hukin & Heath eastern-like pieces experienced its peak between the 1870s and 1880s.
The business was established in 1855 by Jonathan Wilson Hukin and John Thomas Heath. The company entered the market as manufacturing silversmiths and electroplaters. The company’s silver mark was entered in 1875 in the Birmingham Assay Office, which was followed by the entry of the mark of the firm’s founders, Jonathan Wilson Hukin and John Thomas Heath, in 1879 in the London Assay Office. By that time, Hukin & Heath already had several showrooms at 19 Charterhouse Street, Holborn, and a workshop at Imperial Works, Great Charles Street, Birmingham. As for the company’s trade mark, it combines the initials H & H, standing for Hukin & Heath, that is accompanied by an eagle.
One of the brightest pages of Hukin & Heath's history is the time when the company collaborated with Britain’s most famous independent designer, Dr. Christopher Dresser, who promoted and contributed enormously to the British Art Nouveau...
