English Silver Heart Centerpiece
About the Item
English silver heart Made in 1924 Mercedes Walker and Hall. Weight 380 gr, silver925
The company was founded in Sheffield in 1845 by George Walker. Becoming an assistant to Dr. John Wright who had conducted major electroplating experiments Walker secured the electroplating sovereignty for Sheffield. The business was joined by Henry Hall and became Walker & Hall in 1853. The factory was located on Howard Street, Sheffield, while showrooms were opened in 45 Holborn Viaduct, London. Branches were opened in Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Cardiff, Belfast, Hull, Bristol, Melbourne and Adelaide (Australia), Cape Town (South Africa), Wellington (1911) and Auckland (1914) in New Zealand . Walker & Hall was converted into a limited liability company in 1920 with the Walker & Hall Ltd style and combined in 1963 with British Silverware Ltd with Mappin & Webb and Elkington & Co.
For centuries, British silver has been protected by the stamping of symbols and letters that identify the manufacturer, the Analysis Office and the date on which the quality of the silver piece was verified. Thanks to the "date letter" any piece of British sterling silver can be dated exactly.
The Walker & Hall mark is a pennant (tapered flag commonly flown by ships at sea) containing the initials W & H. To follow the evolution of the shape of the flag in hallmarks in sterling silver or other dated documents is a useful reference for the approximate dating of the silver plaque marks.
Sheffield's old plate and galvanized silver are not subject to this practice and the regulation issued by the authorities had the main objective of preventing possible fraud by unscrupulous sellers of plated items. The best-known initiative is the prohibition (in effect since 1896: Elkington was forced to change his sign in 1898) to stamp articles plated with the "crown", to avoid misunderstandings with the symbol that identifies the analysis office of Sheffield.
The absence of an official dating system makes it difficult to date silver articles. An approximate date can be determined by examining:
- the style of the object
- the presence or absence of the crown (before or after c. 1896)
- the date of registration of the model at the patent office
- the presence of a dated dedication
- the date of the event (example: commemorative spoons of the king / queen coronation or jubilee).
