"Music under the Sea, " Spectacular Art Deco Punchbowl/Centerpiece w/ Mermaids

About the Item

A spectacular example of Scandinavian Art Deco design, this punchbowl with geometric handles and figures of mermaids applied in gold over a jade-green ground is a very early example of Wilhelm Kåge's Argenta line of porcelain pieces for the Gustavsberg company in Sweden. Each side of the punchbowl depicts a nude female figure flanked by swaying pods of seaweed, and at the center of the inside bowl is another female figure playing a version of the rebec, an ancient stringed instrument. Kåge was a remarkably creative and productive artist over many years, and was named the artistic director of Gustavsberg in 1917, remaining there until 1949. In the late 1920s, he developed the Argenta line of porcelain pieces glazed in a brilliant turquoise color with applied decorations in silver, often of mermaids and other aquatic creatures. This punchbowl is unusually large and early, and indeed the applied decoration here is in gold rather than silver. Given its size and ambition, this piece may have been intended as a display piece for the Stockholm Exhibition in 1930, where Gustavsberg had a major exhibition of its artistic wares.

    By Jean Beaumont
    Located in Philadelphia, PA
One of the most spectacular high style Art Deco pieces we have ever offered, this large wall charger depicting two female nudes and a deer in an idyllic, color-drenched garden was made in 1927 by the famed Sevres porcelain manufactory in France. The designer was Jean Beaumont, who is known for designing some of the most ambitious and striking of Sevres' Art Deco vases and other pieces in the 1920s and 30s, and the ceramic artist who applied the glazes was Adrien-Auguste Leduc, who worked at Sèvres from 1923 until 1948. Made only two years after the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes was held in Paris, which gave the Art Deco style its name many years later, the theme of this charger -- and its stylized, elongated nudes...
