Extremely Rare Rotterdammer Tile with Two Men in a Boat, Early 17th Century

About the Item

An extremely rare, so-called, Rotterdammer tile, with the decoration of a sailboat. Country: The Netherlands Place: Rotterdam Date: circa 1615 - 1620 Workshop: Claes Wijtmans This tile comes from one of the most rare and sought after tile series ever made. and is known as a Rotterdammer tile. An all over polychrome painting of a sailboat on a sea with two men inside. These types of tiles are published in almost every book about tiles. Of this particular one are in total five examples known. The tile is attributed to the workshop of Claes Wijtmans. Wijtmans founded his workshop in Rotterdam in 1613 and was one of the first to start a tile workshop in Rotterdam. The high quality and bright collors of the Wijtmans production are due Wijtmans other profession: manufacturer of stained glass, from his hand are the windows of the Chruch in Gouda from 1601. This tile was probably found after the bombing of Rotterdam in 1940 and has suffered because of it. The tile has a large restored section at the top, of apr 3cm. Further a glued and retouched corner down right and some restored edge chips. The back looks worse that the front is.

    Repaired: This tile was probably found after the bombing of Rotterdam in 1940 and has suffered because of it. The tile has a large restored section at the top, of apr 3cm. Further a glued and retouched corner down right and some restored edge chips. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Minor structural damages.
