Huge Pair of Stunning Faience Candleholders Manufactory: France (Lorraine) / St. Clément Pottery SIGNED (underglazed) PLEASE NOTE: Emile Gallé and his father Charles manufactured stunning faience fantasy & armorial pieces in a workshop at ST.CLEMENT during period as from the year 1864 until 1876 / the mentioned manufactory was owned by the Thomas Family then. ST.CLEMENT is situated in the neighbourhood of NANCY, the town where Emile Gallé was born and where Charles Gallé had a store selling finest crystal & ceramics items. made circa 1892 stunning models, abundantly painted with blue-golden colours: material is faience glazed / partially cobalt blue painted Hallmarked at upper side: name of manufactury: ' St. Clément / Terre Lorraine / E. Gallé ' Hallmarked at reverse side: S.Clément / Terre de Lorraine All signs are blue painted and underglazed. Probably designed by Gengoult Prouvé (attributed). ________________________________________________________________________________ SUBJECT: Gorgeous sculptured pair of figurines, showing walking & roaring lions, having large paws with (golden painted) claws. Each of them holds a tower to which golden painted coats of arms are attached / the mentioned towers have a function, too: Inside there is a metal (brass) liner existing, for keeping a candle which has to be put into. The coats of arms depict following: A Thistle and the Three Alerions (beakless & feetless birds), all of them being symbols of the Traditional Province of Lorraine in which Nancy and St. Clément are situated. ________________________________________________________________________________ MEASURES: height of lions: 42.5 cm 16.73 inches length: 24.5 & 25 cm 9.64 & 9.84 inches depth: 19.0 cm 7.48 inches inner diameter of candleholder: 2.6 cm 1.22 inch
