12 Minton Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Overlay Service or Dinner Plates

About the Item

This set of 12 Minton service plates is a rare example of Minton's sterling silver overlay. Most silver overlay was made by other porcelain manufacturers and these were surely a custom order. The thick, heavy and profuse silver work, extremely detailed and hand engraved, decorates the clean white blank creating a beautiful contrast. The swirling Art Nouveau pattern defines the elegant frame of the central monogram of "MEJ" and these were retailed by the renowned retailer, Higgins & Seiter, NY, circa 1905. The silver is so thick, each plate weighs almost 1 1/2 lbs. Truly a one-of-a-kind, extraordinary set!

Most often this decorative technique is misnamed as Pate sur Pate but this technique is honestly French enamel. One reserve on each plate is signed by the artist Robert Marshall...
