Chinese export porcelain blue and white porcelain plates, After Maria Sybille Merian, Pronk Workshop Design, Dutch Market, Circa 1740-45 A pair of blue and white plates with a design after Maria Sybille Merian, probably from the Pronk workshop. The Chinese export underglaze blue porcelain plates are decorated in underglaze blue with baroque scrolls highlighted in gold on the border with an image of flowers and tobacco plants in the central well, after an engraving by the famous Dutch botanist and artist Sybilla Merian. Dimensions: 10 1/16 inches diameter x 1 1/8 inches high The Royal Collection has a remarkable collection of Maria Sybille Merian's work, orginally acquired in 1755 by George III, when Prince of Wales.     Chinese export porcelain bacchus mug after Derby Porcelain, circa 1785. The Chinese Export porcelain mug is modeled after a Derby Porcelain original as the head of Bacchus, the face naturalistically & delicately enameled. The eyebrows, beard and hair picked out with lightly etched brown lines. Around his head is a garland of vine leaves enameled in green, the veins of the leaves well delineated in grey, the bunches of grapes in a rich purple. The "C" shaped handle is decorated with stylized vine leaves, the sides of the thick handle with gold lappets.     Antique Derby Porcelain Botanical Salmon-ground Plate, Marsh Hibiscus, by John Brewer after Curtis, The Botanical Magazine, #882, 1806, circa 1815. The Derby Porcelain plate is superbly painted with a Marsh Hibiscus botanical specimen with richly gilded borders with swans and stylized flowerheads on a rich salmon ground.y gilded borders with swans and stylized flowerheads are on a rich salmon ground. The flower is named on the reverse: "Marsh Hibiscus". Diameter: 8 7/8 inches (22.5 cm) Mark: crown, crossed batons, and D mark in red, numerals 4 & 13 in yellow & green inside foot rim. John Brewer, (1764-1816) John was the elder of two brothers who both worked at Derby. Their parents were both artists and from 1762-1767 had studios in London at Rupert Street. Brewer started working at Derby in 1795. He was a talented watercolorist and had never applied his art to porcelain painting.     Chinese Export Porcelain blue & white spoon tray with the Dutch folly fort, circa 1775 The rare Chinese Export blue and white quatrefoil dish depicts the Dutch folly fort in the Canton River. The porcelain dish is painted in underglaze blue with a diaper and flower-head design at the rim. The central medallion depicts a landscape of the Pearl River and the city of Canton far in the distance. The center of the scene presents the Dutch folly fort-one of the old folly forts used as warehouses for Chinese products in the process of being exported to the West. Around the fort can be seen several boats probably transporting cargoes of teas and porcelain coming from inland China. The forts were used by both Chinese and European traders, the Dutch folly fort being one of the most famous. This image is based on C. G. Ekeberg's engraving of 1773. In 1773 Captain Carl Gustav Ekeberg published his recollections of several trips to Canton in the service of the Swedish East India Company. This book was illustrated with several engravings based on his own drawings.
