PAIR Obadiah Sherratt Pearlware Lions

A facing matched pair of pearlware cinnamon bodied lions on grassy plinth bases, faced with three shell-like rainbow colored fans. Obadiah Sherratt (1775-1846) was a Staffordshire potter in Burslem. His figurines of lions and other aggressive species have realized noteworthy auction records. This unusual pair of cinnamon 'Florentine Lions' exhibit eccentric coloration and decorative detail. While other Sherratt Staffordshire lions have feather or foliate decorated footed bases, this pair has vividly colored shell-like rainbows; which were customarily placed at the feet of docile farm animals such as cows.
One of the pair bears a printed paper label reading: GANCI, with a space for No.______, and a space for $_____; in which are written "Obediah" and "Sherett", respectively. Ganci pottery was only produced from 1950 to 1960; copying 18th and 19th century Italian works, principally Capodimonte. THIS PAIR OF SHERRATT LIONS was sold when the Ganci pottery business was in liquidation. Carmelo Ganci had bought and intended to copy this early Staffordshire specimen pair.
