Biedermeier Glass Beaker 'Cupids on a Rope', Anton Kothgasser, Vienna, ca 1825

About the Item

Colorless glass beaker with sweeping wall, with opaque painting 'en terrasse': surrounding depiction above a gilded base, here two rose bushes with ears of corn opposite each other, between them stretched ropes on which two putti are balancing with bow and arrow in their hands, on the lower edge, under the gilding, beaten ranft, colorless stand with 16-pointed, silver-yellow stained base star, on the inside polished, gilded lip rim. Manufactory: Anton Kothgasser (1769 - 1851) trained at the Academy of Fine Arts and from 1784 worked as a design and gold painter in the Vienna porcelain factory. Together with Gottlob Samuel Mohn, Kothgasser created the stained glass windows without lead. After Mohn's death, the technique of transferring the delicate porcelain painting onto the colorless crystal glass was given a second bloom by Kothgasser. He adorned the glasses with meticulously worked landscapes, portraits, pieces of flowers and animals, allegories and buildings; his specialty were panorama glasses with city views of Vienna. Dating: around 1820/1830 Dimensions: Height: 11.5 cm / 4.52 in Diameter: 8.5 cm / 3.34 in Bibliography: Paul von Lichtenberg, Mohn & Kothgasser, München 2009, page 269, picture 265 - motif Condition: very good - extraordinarily good state of preservation.
