Glass Handbag with Black and White Pinstripes by Raiffe
About the Item
This piece is extremely difficult and laborious to make. It begins with a white glass rod about one inch wide by six inches long, which I cover in clear until its about 4 inches in diameter. I then stretch this hot glass cylinder across the studio until its about fifty feet long and is as thinner than a pencil but thicker than a tooth pick. This is called "cane". I break up the cane into five inch segments and line them up like crayons in a box. Then I blow a black bubble and roll over the thin white glass pencils like a steam roller. I blow and twist and sculpt a bag. This is a one of a kind piece.
