Handblown Champagne Glass Porto Vase Extra Large, Andrew Hughes

About the Item

The Porto vase extra large is a simple exercise in optics and color. The champagne color and reflective light are diffused by a surface etching. A single panel, or "porto" is carved and brought to an optical polish on the side allowing the viewer to look inside not only the vessel but inside the glass itself. The interior and bottom curvature provide a "lens" effect that distorts reflections from different viewing angles. Born December 12, 1977 in Brooklyn, New York, Andrew Hughes first started blowing glass in 1997. In that moment, he had an instant connection with the material. Hughes followed this passion for glass to the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) for an BA in Glass, graduating in 2001. While working as an artist assistant in New York, Hughes began making one-off glass pieces for his own use until friends began to take note and purchase pieces as gifts. Serendipitously, around the same time, he got cast as a glassblower in a national beer commercial. The paycheck from the spot served as seed money launch his business in 2006. Hughes has since built-up a multidisciplinary practice collaborating across mediums to make custom sculpture, furniture and lighting that incorporates glass. To this day, every single item is designed and handblown in Brooklyn, NY by Hughes. Hughes has worked intimately with us to develop original lighting and objects defined by the inherent simplicity of forms and refinement of materials. His work has appeared in Sight Unseen, The New York Times, T Magazine, Dwell, Vogue, Elle Decor, and NY Cottages & Gardens. Additional color options available.
