About the Item
It is a set of two beautiful examples of murrina small vases by Fratelli Toso glass factory. Realized around 1920 these are realized with polychrome multicoloured millefiori murrines and have an acid etched matte finish. The vases are authentic examples of early 20th century Murano art glass.
Fratelli Toso was renowned for murrina. Murrine is a glassmaking technique; it involves creating colored patterns or images in a glass cane, which are revealed when the cane is cut into thin cross-sections. The slices obtained by the original cane are juxtaposed on a plate and then hot worked to shape the final object. The process of making murrine is complex and requires a high level of skill to execute. These two vases are part of wider collection property of Toso family in Murano

In the early 1900's Fratelli Toso started to produce glasses in murrine technique. Murrine and Millefiori glasses remained a major product field of Fratelli Toso. In 1912 a very successful series of liberty inspired art glasses, designed by Hans Stoltenberg Lerche, was presented at the Venice Biennale. From 1936 Ermanno Toso became artistic director.
