19th Century French Silver-Gilt Pair of Dishes, Odiot, circa 1890

About the Item

Antique late 19th century French rare and important Empire style pair of solid silver dishes, each of circular form with very fine acanthus leaves borders and chased with a frieze of floral scrolls and laurel leaves, winged griffins facing towards masks, and flanked by roman style urns on a matted ground. The dishes raised on cast winged lion paw feet. Engraved with the initials MPF within a garland. Each plate is hallmarked French silver (950 standard, used 1838-present), Paris, Marks for Odiot (Between 1894 and 1906 the company used the "Pair Cie" with a lamp mark. CONDITION. In Great Condition - No Damage. Size Height (each): 4cm Width (each): 24cm Total Weight: 1450g

    Antique late-19th century French exquisite solid silver-gilt liqueur service, consisting of 4 liqueur bottles, 24 cups, 4 labels and a mirror set serving tray. Made in the Louis XVI style decorated with pronounced beaded boarders, laurel garlands and wrapped ribbons, the oval tray on four leaf capped legs and mounted with two handles. The four glass bottles are hand etched with floral decorations and set with 4 silver mounted stoppers, the four labels inscribed; cognac, chartreuse, curaçao, and cherry-brandy, and presented with 24 glass mounted cups and richly gilded glass holders.     Pair of resin dishes in glazed terracotta. In the South West of France, the country named Landes was a poor country having very few natural resources, the inhabitants lived on meager harvests whose land was manured by their flocks of sheep. The Landais also exploited the resin of the maritime pine: it was collected at the foot of the tree using a very artisanal technique which offered low yields: tapping with “crot” (from the Gascon cròt: hole). To harvest the resin, ancient resin workers dug a hole at the foot of the pine, generally between the roots, which they lined with moss. The resin obtained, if it had not crystallized on the care before arriving at the base of the pine, was full of impurities: twigs, sand, insects, and it contained very little turpentine.
