Antique German Silver Repoussé Battle Scene Tray, Circa 1850

About the Item

This richly decorated silver serving tray with repousse work is from Germany’s Gründerzeit period, circa 1850. The exquisite repoussage depicts an unknown military skirmish of soldiers with spears and swords on horseback. The chaotic action of the scene is offset by the whimsical décor on the raised platter’s edge, which consists of mascarons, fruits, flowers, and animalia with a crimped edge. Gründerzeit, or “Founder’s Period”, was an economic period during the 19th century in Germany and Austria. After the Franco-Prussian War, the confederated German Empire princedoms received war reparations, causing an economic boom that allowed Germany to become unified. The period is marked by economic changes and an increase in industrialization and cultural development. Repousse is the process of crafting a low relief design by hammering the back side of metal. The technique has been in use since around the 3rd century BC. The Gundestrup cauldron is a famous example of an ancient repousse piece. The silver vessel was made in Denmark in the 2nd century BC and is the largest known example of silver work from the Iron Age, which was the last of the pre-history time periods. The tray seen here is an excellent example of quality 19th century silver repousse work. The figures, militaria, horses, etc are all beautifully worked, down to the smallest of details. The silver retains a bright sheen, and is ready to be placed in a display cabinet or resting in a stand on a sideboard. The tray weight 27.2 ounces.

Beneath the crenelle are segmented sections (eight in total) that are adorned with alternating images of a cluster of fruit followed by a tall pinnate leaf. • Heavy Antique French Copper Turbotiere Poacher, Maison Gaillard Paris, c.1850
    Located in Dallas, TX
This heavy tin-lined French copper fish poacher, known as a turbotiere, dates to circa 1850 and was produced by the well-known factory for kitchen equipment, Maison Gaillard Paris. The turbot is a flatfish found in the Atlantic Ocean and this diamond-shaped poacher was designed to accommodate the shape of the fish, hence the name turbotiere. There is a production mark beneath the rolled rim which reads “Gaillard Maison”. A second production mark (“70”) can be seen beneath one of the large looping handles that are affixed by brass mounts with three rivets. The rivets combined with the dovetail seam on the bottom of the poacher attest to the age of production, as these were methods to assemble copper pieces prior to the late-19th century. Copper serving pieces are always in high demand, making our turbotiere poacher from Gaillard Paris a must have for a kitchen decorative...

  • Antique French Painted and Giltwood Overdoor, circa 1850
    Located in Dallas, TX
The reign of Napoleon III, often referred to as “The Second Empire”, featured an amalgamation of styles from previous regimes, ranging from the light and airy Rococo of Louis XV to the more stoic Neoclassical trophies of Louis XVI. Our painted giltwood overdoor from circa 1850 is in the vein of a Regence or Louis XV adaptation of the Napoleon III period. The piece is adorned with flowing motifs inspired by nature, such as the curled leaves, scalloped shell, and deep carvings seen on the overdoor. A main principle of Napoleon III furnishings was to utilize every inch available, as noted by the gadrooned leaf and rinceaux that emanate from behind the center medallion, forming a sprawling border. The medallion features an amazing high relief carving of a floral bouquet surrounded by curled leaves with scrolled tendrils and raised, asymmetrical panels. At the top is a scalloped shell, which is mimicked by a pair of parted leaves set at an angle in each of the upper corners. All of the carvings are presented in giltwood, which pairs nicely with the cream colored background that is enveloped in a quarter round molding (also gilded). The entire grouping is presented as a raised carving, with a thin board behind it that has tas de sable (sandpit) pilasters topped with block finials flanking the overdoor. Unique to most other antique overdoors...
