Barbotine Majolica Glazed Asparagus Platter
About the Item
A wonderful late 19th century French glazed 'Barbotine' Majolica asparagus serving platter with handles, wonderfully decorated in vibrant pastel colours, with haut-relief modelled and glazed asparagus stalks against a woven wicker pattern and a basketweave border. With asparagus much prized as a delicacy during the 1800s, much care was taken over their presentation, with platters such as these a very popular choice. Majolica is a richly coloured, heavyweight clay pottery that is coated with enamel, ornamented with paints, and, finally, glazed.
