"Horse with Flying Tail, " Sgraffito Masterpiece by Glidden Parker, 1940s

About the Item

A large, early and rare example of Glidden Parker's ceramic artistry, this striking tray depicting a horse with flying tail and mane depicts his mastery of the sgraffito technique, whereby the artist created a design by scraping through the wet glaze before firing. Parker was one of the most important graduates of the renowned ceramics department at Alfred College, and he went on to create one of America's most successful potteries, helping to move the nation from Art Deco to a more spare, modern esthetic in his decorative and kitchen ware.
