About the Item

Coffee cup and saucer, decorated with a Hancock type print in black overglaze, which has then been coloured with enamels and highlighted with gilt. The decoration possibly James Giles Workshop; the palette is his and the style matches a signed example in the Begg Collection. James Giles was a British ceramic painter and gilder who established a workshop in London in the mid 18th century. He is known for his high-quality, hand-painted ceramics, which were produced in his workshop and sold to a wealthy clientele. He decorated blanks, largely from Worcester; although once Worcester stopped supplying him around 1770 and going polychrome decoration themselves, he sourced wares from various other makers.
