Minton Porcelain Dessert Service, Turquoise, Equestrian Horses, Victorian, 1871

About the Item

This is a beautiful dessert service made by Minton in 1871, consisting of two high comports, four low comports, and ten plates. All items have a white ground with a bright turquoise and tooled gilt border, and each item is painted with a unique equestrian horse scene. Minton was one of the pioneers of English china production alongside other great potters such as Spode, Davenport, Ridgway, Coalport and others. They were located in Staffordshire and were known specifically for their wonderfully fine white bone china and bright colours; there is a colour called "Minton Blue" which is a fresh azure blue that was very fashionable during the Victorian era. Throughout the different phases of its existence, the factory made top quality creamware, porcelain, majolica and ultimately the finest parian porcelain. Minton excelled in their decorations and gilt work; these were often executed by artists who came from the Sèvres factory in France and brought their skills with them. This set would make a fantastic display for horse lovers, and is excellent for use. Each equestrian image is unique, some shown with their groom and one with a female rider. The gilt rims are a beautiful example of Minton's new discovery of "acid gilding", which allowed them to create these very finely "tooled" borders on a great scale. The plates are marked with the imprinted MINTON mark, as well as a year cypher for the year 1871. The pattern number G736 is painted onto most items. CONDITION REPORT The set is in perfect antique condition except two small chips so the underside of one of the low comports, and a few very minor scratches to some of the images; most of the items seem to have never been used. Antique British porcelain is never perfect. Kilns were fired on coal in the 1800s, and this meant that china from that period can have some firing specks from flying particles. British makers were also known for their experimentation, and sometimes this resulted in technically imperfect results. Due to the shrinkage in the kiln, items can have small firing lines or develop crazing over time, which should not be seen as damage but as an imperfection of the maker's recipes, probably unknown at the time of making. Items have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear, and gilt can have signs of slight disintegration even if never handled. I will reflect any damage, repairs, obvious stress marks, crazing or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks, stains and gilt disintegration can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account. There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can easily see with the eye; a glazing line is a break in the glazing only; hairline is extremely tight and/or superficial and not picked up by the finger; and a crack is obvious both to the eye and the finger. Etcetera - I try to be as accurate as I can and please feel free to ask questions or request more detailed pictures. Dimensions plates 23.5cm (9.25") diameter; high comports 24cm (9.5") diameter and 13.5cm (5.25") tall; low comports 24cm (9.5") diameter and 6.2cm (2.5") tall.

  • Royal Crown Derby Part Dessert Service, Turquoise with Flower Garlands, 1916
    By Royal Crown Derby Porcelain
    Located in London, GB
This is a beautiful part dessert service made by Royal Crown Derby in 1916. The service consists of one serving dish and ten plates, and is decorated with beautiful scalloped rims in turquoise and gilt, delicate flower garlands and a very find flower spray on each item. The Derby Porcelain factory has its roots in the late 1740s, when André Planché, a Walloon Huguenot refugee, started making simple porcelain toys shaped like animals. Local entrepreneur William Duysbury took an interest in his skills and worked with him to improve the quality of his wonderfully shaped items. Together they laid the foundations of what would become a very refined tradition of figure making at Derby. In 1769 Duysbury bought up the bankrupted Chelsea factory, incorporating their reputation for high quality figures, vases and tableware; this combination of traditions, porcelain making skills, sophisticated clients and available work people created one of the best porcelain factories of the 18th and 19th Centuries. The factory went through many ups and downs in the 19th Century and was completely re-constituted in the late 19th Century; today it is one of the very few factories still operative. This plate is a fine example of the Edwardian style with its grace, fine painting and delicate gilt. The pattern has similarities to the famous "Royal Antoinette...

  • 2 Antique 1862 Minton International Exhibition Jeweled Turquoise Plates
    By Minton
    Located in Dayton, OH
Pair of two Minton plates, circa 1862. Provenance : Jerome Schottenstein Estate, Columbus Ohio. Jerome was was an American entrepreneur and philanthropist, co-founder of Schottenstein Stores Corp. The Schottenstein family were Lithuanian immigrants who began an extensive business empire in the late 19th Century. Schottenstein Stores owns stakes in DSW and American Signature Furniture; American Eagle Outfitters, retail liquidator SB360 Capital Partners, over 50 shopping centers, and 5 factories producing its shoes and furniture. It also holds an ownership interest in American Eagle Outfitters, Wehmeyer in Germany, Cold Stone Creamery and The Mazel Company. These superb quality Minton plates are from a dessert service shown at the International Exhibition of 1862 in London. The plates testify to the enduring influence of 18th Century Sèvres on the tastes of Victorian high society. The designs are far from being mere copies, however; while there are recognisable Sèvres elements, they are arranged in entirely new and delightful ways. On the rim are four imitation cameo heads of classical deities en grisaille on a red-brown ground, within oval reserves wreathed in laurel. The profiles are individually painted; compare, for instance, the winged helmeted heads of Hermes/Mercury and you will spot subtle differences. The cameo devices, used here for the first time by Minton, derive from the celebrated Sèvres dinner...
