Qing Chinese Blue & White Porcelain Lidded Jar w Hand Painted Five-Clawed Dragon

About the Item

A very beautiful Chinese porcelain baluster-shaped jar with lid and knob, painted in underglaze blue crackle with hand-painted cobalt blue and white decorations depicting a two-horned, five-clawed dragon amid clouds, who is carrying into the heavens a cube resting on a lotus leaf. Dragons are considered benevolent and powerful creatures in Chinese art. They were depicted as rulers of water, and a symbol of imperial power. A dragon with two horns and five claws was designated for use by the Son of Heaven or Emperor only, while the four-clawed dragon was used by the princes and nobles. Qing dynasty, circa 1800s or earlier. Measurements: 8.25" diameter (6.5" diameter at base) x 12" high (11" high without lid)
