Rare Coalport England Indian Tree Set of 5 Cups with Plates and Serving Platter

About the Item

Set of 5 dessert plates and cups and large rectangular serving or sandwich platter was made of fine porcelain by Coalport China Company in England. It is hand decorated with Indian Tree pattern; despite its name, Indian Tree pattern is based on Chinese art. This well-known multi-color pattern originated at Coalport with variants being produced by most British fine tableware manufacturers. This particular version of the pattern was patented by Peter Bruff and his son Charles Bruff, who owned the factory from 1889 to 1925. All pieces have ornate scalloped rims, consistent with the older version of the pattern. The dessert plates have asymmetrically placed indentations for the cup. Flat cups have figured handles with fine details. All pieces are marked with green "England Coalport AD 1750" mark with the crown that dates back to 1891-1920; after 1920 "England" was replaced by "Made in England". Dessert plates are also marked with ""Bruff's" Patent N 23835/09" in green, and the serving platter is marked with "Original Engraving "Indian Tree" Period 1801" in black. All cups and dessert plates are in good antique condition with very limited signs of wear consistent with the age of the pieces; the platter is in pristine antique condition with almost no signs of age. The cups measure 1, 13/16" tall with 3, 1/8" diameter rim; the dessert plates measure 7" in diameter and 5/8" high, and the platter measures 12, 5/8" long, 9, 11/16" deep, and 1, 1/8" high.

  • Haviland Limoges Butterfly Handled Cup and saucer set, 1879-1889, Aesthetic
    By Haviland & Co.
    Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Cup and saucer set by Haviland & Cie is decorated in Aesthetic style, combining elements of 3 different patterns. Meadow Visitors butterflies, placed between Bracquemond style sprays of pink roses and blue cornflowers, are accentuated with grey and gold medallions in abstract design. The butterflies and roses are decorated with raised enamel accents, and the butterfly shaped handle is outlined with delicate gold veins, tracing the wing pattern. The cup is 2.12" tall and 3.5" wide at the rim; the saucer is 5.65" in diameter. Set uses butterfly handled blank that was in production for relatively short time; factory decorated pieces are rather rare due to limited supply and fragility of the cups. This set is marked with the blue donut-shaped decorator mark, used in 1879-1889, on both cup and saucer, and underglaze green manufacturer marks: H&C on the cup, dating it 1876-1879, and H&C/L on the saucer, dating it 1876-1889. Examples of similar decorations, utilizing abstract border designs instead of medallions on china with Meadow Visitors decor, can be seen in Haviland China...
