16th Century Period Ceramic Italian Olive Jar with Green and Burnt Ochre Patina
About the Item
A charming Italian Ceramic Olive Jar with a mossy green and burnt ochre yellow glaze. Angelic faces with wings are carved on the handles. Felt on the bottom. Side holes included that would have been used to pour the oil. Created circa late 16th Century in Italy.
In good condition. Gentle wear consistent with age and use. A bit of wear on the top side of the front seems to indicate a section that may have been previously worn or removed.
Markings present on the face indicate a name based on our research. The exact letters are “FFCE FRANCESCO VANNI”. Francesco Vani was an Italian Artist that lived circa 1563 - 1610. This may not be attributed to Vani, but the markings likely indicate the time period and country of origin. The letters at the top under the lip read as “IMPRYNETE.” This may indicate an older spelling of the city of Impruneta in Florence, Italy. above Roman numerals that read as “MDCXXXLLW.” The number 049 is marked on the bottom, possibly indicating a modern inventory marking.
This wonderful Olive Jar would make a great feature in any home as a historical conversation piece.
