Large Platter A Winter View of Pittsfield Mass, C1825

About the Item

Large Platter "A Winter View of Pittsfield Mass", C1825. The long white meeting house (Congregational Church) Bullfinch, architect, was built in 1794 and called First Church. It was in use until 1850 when a fire destroyed part of it. The remainder was moved to the left where it became the Young Ladies' Institute, but it was restored again into a church. It became the Bullfinch Meeting House. The famous elm reputed to be 340 years old was cut down in 1861 and surrounded by a fence in 1820. Mr. Allen the former chaplain of the church became a chaplain in Washington's army and and organized the men of his congregation into the Berkshire Minute Men. The female figure in front is supposed to be "Crazy Sue" a village character. In background to the right is the old town hall. The Baptist Church with tall spire c1827, beside it Maplewood Institute and to the left Berkshire hotel c1826. The platter appears to be restored.
