Antique 1900s Peranakan Silver Sirih Leaf Holder

About the Item

A fine and impressive antique Peranakan silver bekas sirih/sirih leaf holder; an addition to our Asian silverware collection. This fine antique Peranakan silver bekas sirih/sirih leaf holder* has a tapering paneled fan shaped form. The two side panels to the anterior portion of the body are embellished with impressive pierced, embossed and chased decoration depicting fish designs amidst geometric ornamented borders. The central panel is ornamented with a subdivided Chinese dragon design below a floral and foliate array. The posterior surface is embellished with further pierced, embossed and chased decoration depicting impressive undulating fruiting vine ornamentation. The lower portion of each section bears an embossed Chinese character on a chased decorated matte background. The plain concaved underside of this fine leaf holder is ornamented with a star motif amidst the character mark hallmarks. Sirih (or betel) was considered a symbol of hospitality in Malay culture and presented in decorative holders. Condition This antique silver leaf holder is a very good gauge of silver, fine quality and in excellent presentation condition. The embossed, chased and pierced decoration is all very sharp. The hallmarks struck to the surface of the underside are all very clear.     An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Chinese Export Silver bowl; an addition to our Asian silverware collection. This exceptional Chinese Export Silver bowl has a plain circular form onto a plain circular swept, spreading foot. The body of this antique Asian silver bowl is embellished with chased traditional oriental chrysanthemum floral and foliate designs, all on a matte background. The decoration to the body incorporates a large shield shaped vacant cartouche to one side. The upper portion of this impressive bowl is encircled with a plain applied moulded border to the incurved shaped rim. The hallmarks struck to the underside of the bowl include: Origin mark: Shanghai (??) Maker's mark: Bao Cheng Branch name: DE JI Artisan silversmith mark: Fang (?)     An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Edwardian English sterling silver Reed and Ribbon pattern fruit/dessert cutlery set for twelve persons made by Mappin & Webb Ltd - boxed; an addition to our dining silverware collection This exceptional antique Edwardian sterling silver fruit/dessert cutlery set consists of twelve knives and twelve forks. The blades of the knives have a rounded form and the forks each have four tines/prongs; the surface of each are plain and unembellished apart from the feature hallmarks. Each piece of this silver flatware service is fitted with the original hallmarked sterling silver handle, crafted in the Reed and Ribbon pattern; this pattern is also known as the Empire II pattern. Each handle is encompassed with a paralleling border of reed and tied ribbon decoration, terminating at the original sterling silver ferrules ornamented with plain embossed bands. Each knife and fork is fitted to the fine and impressive original hinged oak wood canteen box with a lift up lid and lift out tray. The interior of the box retains the original velvet lining. The interior of the cover bears a satin lining bearing the retailer's mark 'Mappin & Webb, 220 Regent Street, London'. The decoration is all very sharp. The original box has been polished by a cabinet maker and is in excellent presentation condition.
