Georgian Masons Ironstone Sauce Tureen & Base Plate Vase & Rock Ptn, circa 1818
About the Item
This is a very decorative ironstone pottery Sauce Tureen complete with cover lid and base plate, produced by the Mason's factory at Lane Delph, Staffordshire, England, circa 1818.
This set consists of three pieces, the tureen with side two handles, the lid with a cross knop & spoon cutaway and the base plate with a slightly raised circular centre section, all well potted.
All three pieces are beautifully and elaborately decorated in one of Mason's chinoiserie patterns, called Vase and Rock which is sometimes called Peking Vase and tends to be a rarer pattern. The pattern is very richly hand-painted, over-glaze in brilliant enamels of cobalt blue, burnt orange, green, yellow and puce all in varying shades, over a blue transfer printed under-glaze outline. The handles of the tureen and the cover lid knop are painted in mazarine blue with gold gilded highlights. This pattern is illustrated on Page 105 of Mason's Pattern book published by The Mason's Collectors' Club
None of the pieces are marked which was often the case when a piece formed part of a larger service where only a few of the individual pieces would have been marked. however this is definitely a Mason's Ironstone piece, produced from the very early period, Circa 1818, with Ironstone only produced by them from 1813, which is late George 111 period.
Overall , a very beautiful, early, hand painted Tureen set in a beautiful pattern.
