Mid-18th Century Chelsea Porcelain Botanical Trompe L'oeil Leaf Dish

About the Item

Chelsea Porcelain Botanical Dish, Brown Anchor Period circa 1758-60 The large red anchor period Chelsea Porcelain tromp l'oeil leaf dish is naturally colored and modelled as an open cabbage leaf with a curved stem issuing puce moulded veins, the leaves are edged in green shading to light yellow while in the center of the dish is a sprig of red flowers. On the reverse is a grouping of green painted leaves, one covering a firing fault. Mark: large painted Brown anchor. The Brown Anchor period was a time of great innovation and experimentation at The Chelsea Factory. The factory was producing some of the finest porcelain in the world, and the botanical dishes were among its most popular items. The dishes were often decorated with flowers and other plants, and they were prized for their realism and beauty. Dimensions: 11 1/2 inches wide x 9 inches deep x 2 1/4 inches Condition Good with u-section in/out at rim. Reference: Chelsea Porcelain at Williamsburg, John Austin, Pages 96-97, #87 for illustration of a similar pair but without the flower painting. The author mentions that this shape of leaf dish was used both as an underdish for tromp l'oeil tureens such as rabbit, cauliflower, melon and rose forms and also as part of dessert services. He quotes a description from the Chelsea Porcelain sale on the sixth day, lot 42, in 1755 described as "scollop'd compotiers green leaves." (Ref: NY10285-nik).
