About the Item
An exceptional, fine and impressive pair of antique Victorian English sterling silver salts made by Paul Storr; an addition to our silver cruet and condiment collection.
These exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver salts have a circular cauldron shaped form.
The rounded, panelled body of each salt is embellished with a contemporary bright cut engraved crest of a mullet between two wings.
The flared rims of these Victorian silver salts are ornamented with fine and impressive applied tied reed decorated border.
Each salt is supported by three cast scrolling feet ornamented with impressive leaf decorated sockets in junction with the body.
These antique pieces of silverware have gilded interior.
These exceptional sterling silver salts were crafted by the very collectable and important London silversmith Paul Storr.
* This crest pertains to the family of Baring. These salts were in the possession of a member of the Baring banking family; a family known for the number of baronetcies/peerages granted between 1793-1960. Read this items heraldic identification report.
Condition
These antique Victorian silver salts are an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in excellent condition in keeping with age.
The cast decoration is all very sharp and the applied border shows signs of wear in keeping with age.
There is some natural surface wear to the interior, as often expected in keeping with age.
The applied decoration is very sharp and both of the bright cut engraved crests are very crisp.
Full hallmarks struck to the surface of each salt are have significant wear in keeping with age and location.
The date letter surround, in conjunction with the registration date of the maker, determines the date of this piece between 1836-1838, with a strong probability of 1838 due to the letter shape.
