Antique Large English Victorian Silver Plated Salver 19th Century

About the Item

This is a large wonderful antique silver plated Victorian salver bearing the makers marks for the renowned silversmith Elkingon and the date mark for 1888. It has beautiful embossed and engraved floral and foliate decoration in the Neo-classical style and is raised on elegant acanthus tripod clasp feet. The centre features an engraved family motto and crest. This salver is of fabulous quality and will add an Imperial look to your surroundings. Condition: In excellent condition with no dings, dents or signs of repair. Please see photos for confirmation. Elkington & Co was a silver manufacturer from Birmingham, England. The firm was founded by George Richards Elkington and his brother, Henry Elkington, in the 1830s. It operated under the name G. R. Elkington & Co. until 1842, when a third partner, Josiah Mason, joined the firm. It operated as Elkington, Mason, & Co. until 1861, when the partnership with Mason was terminated. The firm operated independently as Elkington & Co. from 1861 until 1963. It was then taken over by British Silverware, Ltd. In 1971 British Silverware, Ltd. became a subsidiary of Delta Metal Co. Ltd. Over the course of history it became very successful and was one of the prime producers of silver plating. Elkington received various royal warrants of appointments. One of their most famous pieces is the electrotype copy of the Jerningham Wine Cooler, at the Victoria & Albert Museum.

After his death the business was continued under the same style by the founder's son William Carr Hutton until 1864, when the name was changed to William Hutton & Son. This was a partnership of William Carr Hutton and his youngest son Herbert Hutton (senior, born 1843).William Carr Hutton died in 1865 and c. 1870 Herbert Hutton Sr. was joined by his brothers James Edward Hutton (b. 1839) and Robert (b. 1840) and the name was changed to William Hutton & Sons. A London showroom was opened in 1863 (13 Thavies Inn Holborn until 1891, and later 7 Farrington Road until 1918).In 1893 the firm acquired Rupert Favell & Co (manufacturer silversmith at Bucknall Street, Oxford Street, London) and in the same year became William Hutton & Sons Ltd.The firm acquired Creswick & Co in 1902, beginning to use their crossed arrows marks.The last Hutton family MD was Herbert Hutton Jr. before the company failed in 1930.     This is a truly magnificent and highly distinguished pair of antique Victorian silver-plated five-light, four branch table candelabra by the renowned silversmiths Elkington & Co, Birmingham, bearing the Elkington mark with date letter for 1873. Each of these splendid candelabra features a stunning fluted stem with Corinthian Capital cast socket and detachable arms with four foliage cast branches, each terminating in a tapering socket with a further central socket. To add even more splendour to this superb pair, they stand on an impressive square shaped bases decorated with classical urns. The undersides of the candelabra bear the registration number 18123.
